Campbell Crichton Dunn: Head of Design at Scabal
His favorite pieces from the Autumn Winter collection
Sumptuous velvets; classic cashmeres; seasonally rich colourways and daring new blends: Scabal’s Autumn Winter 2019 collection covers luxury, workwear and wardrobe staples – as well as innovative additions to it.
While it has always been our mission to answer sartorial questions before they’re even asked, at Scabal we also pride ourselves on thinking bigger and finding inspiration in unexpected places – from landscapes to visual art, from raw materials to new combinations and from heritage to cutting-edge technology. Campbell Crichton-Dunn, Scabal’s Head of Design, is the man responsible. We sat down with him to find out more.
As we all know, a suit is only as good as the material it is cut from. The Gleneagle fabrics are one of Dunn’s personal favourites. “They have that British character and design: warm, and interesting,” he explains. “It adds real character to a jacket or coat.” For a more classic suiting look I also love the Galaxy collection, it contains so many easy to wear fabrics with discreet designs and details in colours that work for everyone.
“This season, I have taken inspiration from two very different sources,” Dunn continues, “the British landscape which has given us the chance to introduce some elements of a traditional shooting jacket to the tailoring collection like leather shoulder patches and Martingale back panels, which have added a rich country feel to the look. The second story is Urban landscape where we have created smart sartorial looks that are functional and practical for city life. As a made to measure house it’s important to keep adding new options to our collections each season not only to keep things contemporary but also to give our customers even more ways to personalise their pieces.
For the first time we have introduced made to measure overcoats that are designed to complement and be worn over tailoring pieces, but can equally be worn alone for more casual occasions. I think it’s very important that a man’s wardrobe pieces work together in multiple ways and cover many wearing occasions, most men don’t enjoy shopping even when it’s a personal experience like Scabal so if they can purchase an high quality item that is both beautiful and adaptable to different environments it means less time shopping and more time enjoying life.”
Campbell’s go to piece from the AW19 collection is the Enfield Trench coat: coolly classic, this season sees it reimagined for the modern man. “This style is a contemporary interpretation of the classic British trench coat. It has that oversized feel but also a soft, up-to-date construction – and of course, it’s made in our own factory.” Campbell designed the textile himself, “with the help of our master craftsmen at the Scabal mill, in Yorkshire, England. The design of the fabric is a hounds-tooth, with overcheck placement in various colours of melange browns to give it a feeling of warm luxury.”
Dunn offers a glimpse behind the scenes; now it’s time to introduce it to into your wardrobe.
