Autumn/Winter 2017

Scabal Collection

It’s no coincidence that as we slide into the cold-weather months, we look to the warm embrace of cinema to provide cultural distraction; a time for the eagerly awaited blockbusters and excited award speculation. Scabal, too, looks to the silver screen for new season inspiration.

As Head of Design, Campbell Dunn, explains: “Some very interesting adaptations and twists were made to the classic suit look: mixing in casual or unexpected elements; everything from double-breasted trench coats over cashmere, to tailoring layered with leather or shearling jackets.”

The result is an iconic, smart and timeless collection, with a knowing nod to some film noir favourites.

Those hardboiled tales from Forties and Fifties Hollywood are as enduring for their style as they are their storylines. Sartorially speaking, that suit, tie and off-centre fedora combination beloved of detectives, private investigators and newspaper men is a landmark look.

Take Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, perhaps one of the most iconic characters in one of the most iconic noir films. He commands the screen in a classic three-piece and an oft-imitated pinstripe double-breasted suit, accessorised with that tilted hat and wraparound trenchcoat. It’s the defining noir styling: simultaneously smart and lived-in.

A technicolour update didn’t dampen the cinematic stylings of Chinatown where Jack Nicholson shone in a series of grey three-pieces and dapper double-breasted jackets – a hat never far from his head.

While Scabal always keeps one eye on the future, you’ll find noirish nods throughout this new-season collection – they’re some of Hollywood’s best-dressed dramas, after all…
